I am a former professor of English with over four decades of experience working closely with writers at every stage of their development—from first-year students to advanced scholars and book authors.
My academic path began in an unexpected way. As a first-generation working-class student, I had never imagined that it might be possible to build a life around reading, writing, and thinking. That realization shaped everything that followed.
I went on to earn my Ph.D. in English from the University of New Mexico and later taught at institutions including Ohio State University and Ohio University, where I became a full professor.
Along the way, I published two books—Textual Politics and the Language Poets (Indiana University Press) and The Abyss of Representation (Duke University Press)—as well as dozens of essays in literary and cultural studies. My third book, Into the Cenote with Gloria Anzaldúa, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury.
My work has consistently engaged questions of voice, interpretation, and the stakes of writing within academic and intellectual life. What has remained constant throughout is my commitment to working closely with writers—not simply correcting sentences, but helping to clarify thought, strengthen structure, and preserve the integrity of each writer’s voice.
In recent years, following a period of personal loss and recovery, I stepped away from full-time university teaching and relocated to Finland with my family. This transition has allowed me to focus more directly on one of the most meaningful aspects of my work: supporting writers through the challenges of academic and intellectual writing. I understand writing not only as a technical task, but as a process that often involves uncertainty, revision, and discovery.
I now offer editing services for:
- journal articles
- dissertations and theses
- book manuscripts
- other forms of scholarly writing
My approach is collaborative and attentive. I work with you not only to improve clarity and correctness, but to help your writing more fully express what you are trying to say.
If you are working on a project and would like support, I would be glad to hear from you.
